As the saying goes, nothing lasts forever. But it seems like the hoop earring trend actually has. The most popular styles of hoops change every few years but it seems like hoops have always been a staple in women's accessory wardrobes. I decided to look back in time and try to find out who started the hoop earrings trend. Here's my brief history of where hoop earrings:

The origin of hoop earrings dates way further back than modern times. For basically as long as jewelry has been around, so have hoop earrings. Even before Instagram influencers existed to tell us what is cool, the hoop earring trend was real. In fact, one of the earliest records of women wearing hoop earrings was actually in the Bronze Age (2700-1100 BC), which means that this earring style is more than 3100 years old.

Hoop earrings were also common in Africa in the years 300-400 AD in the region that is now Sudan. They were also popular in Egypt, Vietnam and India around this time. Even cats were adorned with gold hoop earrings in ancient Egypt.

From Shakespeare, to Marilyn Monroe, to Josephine Baker, to Cher to Jennifer Lopez, hoop earrings have always had a place in modern fashion. In pop culture, hoops were popular among entertainers and women of color in the 60s, the disco scene in the 70s, then rap and R&B in the 80s and 90s.

Now, they obviously have had a huge resurgence. Hoops can be seen all over social media, in magazines, on red carpets, and in real life. Since the 90's, Jennifer Lopez is almost never seen without a pair of hoop earrings on. Thick gold hoop earrings are by far the most popular earrings I see in my day to day life. For people like freshman U.S. representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, gold hoops have become a part of her signature look that will go down in history.

What is it about hoops that have withstood the test of thousands and thousands of years of time? For many women, hoops make them feel empowered and put together. Circles have always been a timeless shape and because of that hoops perfectly draw attention to and frame your face without being distracting. Since hoop earrings have never gone out of style, they are like a little black dress or a white button down - you can always reach for them and look chic.

On a more modern (and superficial) note, hoop earrings photograph great so a good pair of gold hoops are the perfect selfie accessory. These days, hoops come in every shape, size, and color, so everyone can find the perfect pair of hoops for them. From skinny silver hoops, to medium rose gold hoops, to chunky gold hoops and everything in between, there is a pair of hoops out there for everyone.
