Clean Jewelry 101

The jewelry industry needed a shake up. "Hypoallergenic Earrings" just weren't cutting it. So we created something new: Clean Jewelry. There are no tricks or hidden agendas here. We know sensitive ears are caused by metal allergies (a.k.a. contact dermatitis). We want to give you ALL of the information you need to make an educated purchase.

What is Clean Jewelry?

There has historically been two categories of jewelry: Fine Jewelry & Costume Jewelry.

We are defining a third category: Clean Jewelry.

Clean Jewelry is any jewelry that is made with biocompatible, non-reactive, non-allergenic materials. The point of Clean Jewelry is to put a focus on jewelry as skincare.

Isn't that the same as "Hypoallergenic earrings"?

NO NO NO. "Hypoallergenic", much like the term "organic," has lost all meaning. Hypoallergenic earrings is a marketing term that brands use to give the feeling of health or safety, but there are no standards that a brand has to meet to use that term. You will see through a quick google search that the term "hypoallergenic earrings" is used on almost every different kind of earring regardless of the actual materials they are made with.

What about "nickel free earrings"?

Nickel is just one of many metals that can cause an allergy. The point of Clean Jewelry is to identify and eliminate ALL reactive metals.

Why do we need Clean Jewelry?

Jewelry is made with metal and most metals DO NOT agree with the human body. Jewelry, especially earrings, when worn are in very close contact with your skin. More than 20% of people are allergic to metal and when those people wear earrings made with reactive metals their skin reacts.

Fine Jewelry is NOT the solution for sensitive ears.

Sensitive ears were often considered to be a costume jewelry vs. fine jewelry problem. People believed that more expensive jewelry would eliminate any problems with earring reactions. That is NOT true. Sensitive ears are the result of a metal allergy. People can be allergic to gold or silver just like they can be allergic to nickel or copper. The ONLY solution is to wear metals that are non-reactive with the human body.

There are only two metals we ever make our earrings with:

1. ASTM F-36: Pure, unalloyed titanium. This is the safest metal for sensitive ears because it is the least likely to cause a reaction. We use this for almost all of our earrings.

2. ASTM F-167: Implant grade titanium. This is an biocompatible alloy. We use this for some of our flat back studs.

About Our Products:

  • Allergen Free. We choose to use metals that have been studied and are known to be safe for the human body.
  • Safe for Sensitive Ears. Made with non-allergenic metals that will not trigger a reaction.
  • Pure > Mixed. We use pure metals rather than alloys. The more pure a product is, the easier it is to avoid allergens.
  • Lab Tested. Used to independently confirm the purity & metal composition of our earrings.
  • Cruelty Free. No animal testing ever.
  • Sustainable. Titanium is self cleaning and does not rust which makes it 100% recyclable.
